Booker T. and the M.G.’s – Green Onions

A member of Stax Records’ house band, Booker T. Jones was seventeen years old when he wrote and recorded the iconic organ part in the R&B/soul hit Green Onions. Unbelievable.

Here is the first of the two organ solos in the piece. Although a simple part, Booker is at times off the beat and doing his own thing in a very cool way that was difficult to nail down. The simplicity of the part works against me as even very small timing discrepancies are immediately apparent.

Here we go, then, Booker T. Jones in the left channel, me in the right, the first killer solo from Green Onions…
